I have long lusted after the Neve 1073. When the opportunity came up for me to review this legendary mic preamp, I was extremely optimistic. I had high expectations. Considering this is considered the best preamp ever made, I expected nothing but an incredible sound. I wasn't disappointed.
There is a harmonic richness, a harmonic complexity, that comes out when you track with pre into your interface. It's a little difficult to articulate and it's better heard than explained.
This pre can be used on instruments as well as microphone. I tried with dynamics like the sm57, and with condensers. All gave my amazing results. It sounds like you are right int the room with the performer. I can't explain it in another way. It makes you feel like you are right there with the microphone and it is very immersive and 3D. I was pretty impressed in how it made a basic sm57 sound so much better.
